Privacy policy

In short: Makimedia has no account, no ads, no analytics and no server of its own. Your library, your watch history and your settings stay on your devices. The only things that leave them are look-ups of film and show details from TMDB, subtitle searches on OpenSubtitles if you turn that on, and streaming between your own devices on your home network.

Who we are

Makimedia is a free, open source video player made by TopicDev for Windows, Android and Android TV. This policy covers the Makimedia app on every platform and this website.

Makimedia is not a streaming service. It doesn't provide, sell, host or stream any films or shows, and it has no catalogue of its own. It only plays video files that you already have on your own devices.

What stays on your device

Makimedia keeps everything it knows in a database on the device it runs on:

the folders you chose and the video files found in them, with their names, sizes and technical details
where you stopped in each video, what you've watched, and when
film and show details, posters and cast downloaded from TMDB
collections you made, matches you corrected, and your settings
a log file used to find problems, which is never sent anywhere

None of this is uploaded to us or anyone else. We have no server that could receive it.

What is sent over the internet

TMDB (The Movie Database). To show posters and details, Makimedia sends TMDB the title and year it reads from a file's name, for example "Blade Runner 2049", and later the TMDB number of the film or show it matched. It then downloads the artwork. Each title is looked up once and kept on the device. The file itself, its location and your watch history are never sent. TMDB sees your IP address, as any website would. Their handling of it is covered by the TMDB privacy policy.

OpenSubtitles, only if you use it. Searching for subtitles is off until you add your own OpenSubtitles account in Settings. Your username and password are stored on your device and sent only to OpenSubtitles, to sign in. A search tells OpenSubtitles which film or episode you want subtitles for. Makimedia makes no other internet connections. You can use it with the network off. Matching and subtitle search simply wait until you're back online.

Streaming between your devices

When you turn on streaming on a Windows PC, your Android devices can find it on your local network and play its library. The library listing, artwork and video go directly between your own devices over your home network. Nothing goes through the internet or through us. Streaming stops when you turn it off.

Permissions on Android

Videos and storage: to find and play the video files on your device, SD card or USB drive.
Internet, network and Wi-Fi state: for TMDB and OpenSubtitles, and to find a PC that is streaming on your home network.

On Android TV you can skip the storage permission and only stream from a PC.

This website

This website has no cookies, no analytics and no tracking. It is hosted on GitHub Pages, which, like any web host, may keep standard server logs such as your IP address for security. See the GitHub privacy statement.

The contact form

The contact form sends what you type into it: your email address, your name if you give it, the topic, the device and your message. It is delivered to our inbox by Web3Forms, which forwards it by email and doesn't keep a copy. Like any web service, Web3Forms sees the IP address the message was sent from and includes it in the email to us, as a guard against spam; we don't use it for anything else. We use your email address only to reply to you, never for newsletters or marketing, and we don't share it. You can ask us to delete a message at any time.

What we never do

No advertising and no advertising identifiers
No analytics, telemetry or crash reporting services
No selling or sharing of data. The app collects none, and a message you send us is used only to answer it

Deleting your data

Because everything is on your device, uninstalling Makimedia removes it. On Android you can also clear the app's storage in system settings. On Windows the data is in the TopicDev\Makimedia folders inside %APPDATA% and %LOCALAPPDATA%. Settings also lets you remove single files from the library and forget libraries stored from a PC you streamed from.

Children

The Makimedia app doesn't collect personal information from anyone, including children. The only personal information we ever receive is what someone chooses to send us through the contact form or by email.

Changes

If this policy changes, the new version will be posted on this page with a new date.
