Makimedia has a home on the web. Here is what it is, why streaming at home is at its heart, and what comes next.
What Makimedia is
Makimedia is a free, open source video player for Windows, Android phones and tablets, and Android TV. You point it at the folders where you keep your films and shows, and it turns them into a library: posters, cast, episode lists, and the place where you stopped watching.
Your files always come first. The library works with the network off, and a file that can't be identified still plays and still shows up. Posters and details come from TMDB, looked up once per title and then kept on your device.
Your PC, streaming to every screen at home
The part we're proudest of: turn on streaming on your Windows PC, and your phone, tablet or TV finds it on its own. There is no server to set up and no address to type. Your whole library appears on the other device, with its posters and your progress, and the video never leaves your home network.
Made for each screen
A mouse, a touchscreen and a TV remote each get their own controls:
- On Windows, keyboard shortcuts, media keys and an always-on-top mini player.
- On phones and tablets, double-tap to skip, swipe for volume and brightness, and a lock against pocket taps.
- On Android TV, every screen works with the remote alone, with hardware decoding for 4K.
Free, and it stays that way
No account, no ads, no subscription and no tracking. Makimedia is released under the GNU General Public License, and its source code is on GitHub for anyone to read. It is a player, not a streaming service: it has no catalogue of its own and plays only files you already have.
What comes next
